Kayonza is a small town 30 miles east of Kigali. Most families live in mud or banana leaf huts and struggle to find work. Men and women sometimes help with household chores or harvesting crops to earn a living.

In 2003, Africa New Life opened a school, New Life Christian Academy, to give poor children who otherwise couldn’t have afforded school the same opportunities as the wealthy of the country. In addition to New Life Christian Academy, Africa New Life has six children’s homes on the school property. New Life Bible Church meets in the cafeteria every Sunday. Regardless of where they attend school, sponsored children in Kayonza come to New Life Christian Academy to participate in Center Day on Saturday at least once a month. At Center Day children are fed, correspond with their sponsors, enjoy games and hear about God.
In 2011, New Life Christian Academy secondary school tested as the top secondary school in Rwanda, among 1,061 other schools.
